Back Country Outfitters & Guides Description
Drive to the northern-most tip of the Outer Banks, and the development stops. Living here on this rugged coastline, as they have for the past 400 years, is a venerable herd of wild mustangs, descendants of horses brought by Spanish explorers. Kids love everything about this 2.5-hour tour, offered by Back Country Outfitters & Guides: riding in the 4-wheel-drive vehicle on the beach, listening to the tour guides' yarns, and spotting animals like dolphins, wild boars, and goats. But the highlight for both kids and adults are the wild mustangs -- seeing them for the first time is a remarkable, jaw-dropping experience, one that may ignite an obsession for horses that will last long after the vacation is over.
Kid Tips
Babies: There is ample time to get out and walk around. Bring your child's carseat.
School-Age Kids: Kids are engaged by filling out the "critter count" form on the tour. They'll be amazed by how many different kinds of animals they see.
Planning Notes
- Bring your camera. You'll kick yourself if you don't!
- Add a paddle. Adults and kids 7 and older can go on a combination 4-wheel-drive and kayak tour. The boat tour of Corrituck Sound often brings paddlers right up to grazing ponies. Each child needs an accompanying adult. (Adults $75; kids 7-11 $37.50)
- Bring snacks and water. Neither is provided or available for purchase.
