Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Description
The Outer Banks are known for their lighthouses, and some families go on a quest to visit them all. But if you visit just one, make it the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. It's the tallest in the nation and its barber-shop stripes make it easy to recognize. To get a great view of the seashore, climb the 248 steps. It's a difficult and often crowded climb, but kids' enthusiasm propels them up.

Kid Tips
Babies: Visitors are not permitted to carry babies up the steps, but it's still fun to browse in the visitor's center and take pictures of the famous lighthouse.
Toddlers & Pre-K: Guests must be at least 42 inches tall and capable of climbing the 248 steps on their own (the equivalent of a 12-story building).
