Forest Discovery Center Description
This forest conservation educational center is a small treasure. Kids go underground to see what lives under the forest floor, scramble around finding animals for a scavenger hunt, and play a computer game in which they manage forest resources. The center is filled with fairly realistic life-sized mannequins posed as forest workers (kids go nuts over the dog with the wagging tail!). A favorite activity is the simulated helicopter ride over a forest fire. Also, two walking trails (each a mile long) wind through the woods -- on one, kids encounter an old train; and on another, they can explore several historic buildings.
Kid Tips
Babies: Outside the caf (which serves snacks and drinks only, no meals) is a large porch with a peaceful view of the woods. One of these rocking chairs would be a perfect place to calm and feed a baby.
Toddlers & Pre-K: Everything here is appropriate for preschoolers. They seem quite impressed with the life-like mannequins!
School-Age Kids: Those kids running around with the sheets of paper are on a scavenger hunt. Make sure to ask for the form. There's a little prize at the end.
Planning Notes
- Check the website. There are some neat special events, including a "llama tea party," where llamas carry walkers' snacks.
- Bring cash. The café doesn't accept credit cards.
