Appalachian Craft Center Description
Downtown Asheville has a lot of great stores where you can buy traditional crafts made by local artists. One of the best is Appalachian Craft Center. You'll find quilts, homemade brooms, and "face jugs" -- a popular folk art that's exactly what it sounds like: jugs with strange faces carved on the side. The selection of traditional Appalachian toys is outstanding. Kids will love the sock monkeys and pop guns. Ask the owner to show you the "gee-haw whimmydiddle." She'll be glad to demonstrate.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: There's plenty here to delight young children but keep an eye on them: there are breakables.
School-Age Kids: The traditional toys are a big hit, and give hope to parents weary of the Xbox era.
Planning Notes
- Back-up plan. If the store is closed, there's a smaller version of it in the Renaissance Asheville Hotel, and that one is open every day from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
