Cavern
Linville Caverns Description
Have your kids ever seen faces in clouds? If so, they'll love looking for George Washington or the alligator, two popular rock formations in Linville Caverns. Of course there's more to enjoy. In the summer, the cavern provides cool relief as visitors explore the stalactites and stalagmites. (Can you remember which is which?) If you're lucky, you'll spot a bat hibernating (or just visiting). One of the biggest "wow" moments on the tour is standing on a grate over the "bottomless lake," which is more than 250 feet deep.
Kid Tips
Babies: This is not a baby-friendly attraction. Strollers and backpack carriers aren't allowed because of the narrow, low passages.
Toddlers & Pre-K: Older preschoolers can handle the passages. In fact, this is one of those times when it pays to be short!
School-Age Kids: This is a popular field trip destination for schools, so the guides are well-practiced in making the tours interesting and age-appropriate.
Planning Notes
- Stay warm. The cave is a constant 52 degrees and it can be a little drippy, so dress to stay warm and dry.
