Charlotte at Play Description

Don't let the strip mall location fool you—this small children's museum delights kids. Emphasizing imagination over high-tech exhibits, it features a construction zone where kids can connect big PVC pipes, a campsite where they crawl in and out of a tent and "cook" food on a grill, and a veterinarian's office that displays pictures of actual adoptable dogs. Local touches like the "NASCAR speedway" for ride-on cars and the mini-Trader Joes (the real one is just a couple miles away) make this a fun spot to visit.

Kid Tips

Babies: Entertain babies in the "under 2" area, which has soft play toys, books, and a big tree to crawl through.

Toddlers & Pre-K: Don't miss story time, which usually features books with a seasonal theme accompanied by song singing and bubble-blowing.

School-Age Kids: Although geared toward younger kids, first and second graders will still have fun here -- particularly those who enjoy donning costumes for play in the castle.

Planning Notes

    • Plan lunch. No food is sold here, but there are several family-friendly places to eat in the area, including Good Ol' Days, a 50s-style diner at 3351 Pineville Matthews Road.
    • Come and go. A hand stamp allows visitors to return later in the day.
    • Special programs. Check the website for the schedule of craft and movement programs.
