Rockwell Museum of Western Art Description

Before your teen starts to roll his or her eyes, offer them some comfort: The Rockwell Museum has nothing to do with Norman Rockwell (although one of his prints is in the gallery). It is all about cowboys, Native Americans, and lore of the West, and if any of those things are of interest, the museum will be an enjoyable stop.

Kid Tips

Babies: During the school day the top floor terrace offers a quiet spot for people-watching.

Toddlers & Pre-K: The Kids West area upstairs includes a real teepee and plenty of clothes for dress up and pretend (think: Davey Crocker hats, old-fashioned bonnets, and authentic cowboy gear).

School-Age Kids: The Art Packs program (free) is a hit with the school-age crowd, who can choose from one of four themed backpacks that will lead them on an art-finding scavenger hunt through the museum. If they complete it, they'll be rewarded with a badge (sticker) and a coupon for a taco at Cantina Restaurant next door.

Pre-Teens & Teens: They'll either love it or hate it. Bend toward art lovers or those with an interest in Westerns or horses. The building used to be an old city hall -- a peek at the former jail cell doors might interest older kids.

Planning Notes

  • Kids West rules. Every July the museum moves its popular Kids West setting outside during the Festival of Art. The free family weekend includes meeting with a cowboy-ologist and a look at an authentic chuck wagon, as well as face painting, a miniature trading post, crafts, and more.
