Journey Behind the Falls Description
Parks on both sides of the border offer views of the Falls, but the Canadian side lets kids literally walk into them. A series of tunnels that were originally built in 1889 have been upgraded and reinforced with concrete to create a one-of-a-kind Falls viewing experience that allows visitors to hear and "feel" the thunderous waters through viewing portals and open-air (but safety-bar barricaded) lookout spots inside the tunnels. Your kids will tell you "It's so awesome!" but the roar is so loud underground you probably won't hear them -- judge by the awe-filled stare they'll sport instead.
Kid Tips
Babies: Carry them in your arms and leave the strollers up top.
School-Age Kids: Placards with great information line the walls along the way to help older kids understand how the tunnels were made and the importance of the Niagara River.
Planning Notes
- Get set, get wet. Visitors wear bright yellow ponchos with a hood ("Look at me! I'm a bumble bee!" said one 3-year-old), but you'll still be smart to bring a change of clothes for afterward.
- Go early. Make this one of your first stops of the day and avoid the noon to 2 p.m. slot, when line-ups are longest.
