Castellani Art Museum Description
Even kids who aren't fascinated by the colorful paintings and sculptures will thoroughly enjoy a trip to this museum -- kids are exposed to the arts in a setting so intimate and comfortable they may not even realize they're in a museum. Numerous stations give little artists a chance to feel inspired by the works and create their own masterpieces. The Freedom Crossing exhibit offers a comprehensive yet tangible explanation of the African American slave history experience for teens; videos narrated by local television personalities and dramatic actors mesmerize kids, as do the information tablets, tiny shackles, and other artifacts around the room.
Kid Tips
Babies: This is a great spot to visit with your baby for a quiet afternoon nap in the stroller. Baby can rest in peace while you contemplate the various collections.
Pre-Teens & Teens: If they don't have an interest in art or the Underground Railroad, they may whiz through in 10 minutes or less.
Planning Notes
- Free to park. Ask the receptionist inside for a pass or risk getting towed.
- Brown bag it. There's no restaurant on-site, but space abounds outside for a picnic lunch.
- Freedom Crossing caution. This permanent exhibit showcases art installations, films, and displays related to the Underground Railroad that may resonate with older kids who have studied the subject in school, but could also stimulate tough questions from younger kids unfamiliar with the concept of slavery.
