Niagara Power Project - Power Vista Description

A power generation plant shouldn't be this much fun. Kids touch, pull, crank, twist, and bang their way through science projects and experiments that show how energy and electricity are generated and consumed. "Faster, Mommy! Faster!" said one school-aged child as mom pedaled an electricity-generating bike. Adults and some older kids will enjoy the 15-minute film in the basement theater, but younger kids will bored stiff.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Young kids will get a kick out of the bridge that connects the information center with the power plant. Standing in the walkway over the highway as cars and trucks whiz by below is a great diversion for fussy tots.

School-Age Kids: They might not be able to read all of the placards explaining why the knobs and buttons they are pushing do what they do, but the whizzing, buzzing, and flashing lights will be entertainment enough. Concepts like magnetism are made simple in exhibits specially designed for school kids.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Science becomes tactile here; concepts that puzzle them in class might be clearer after the trip. Call ahead and set up a one-hour child-friendly tour that includes a hair-raising turn at a static electricity generating machine.

Planning Notes

  • Ask and you shall receive. A book of power puzzles (for older kids) or an electricity activity book are available free of charge from the information desk at the front of the building. Postcards are also free of charge and make a great souvenir/gift for friends back home.
  • Pack a snack. A lunchroom downstairs is air conditioned, or opt to eat at one of the picnic tables outside or on the lawn of the neighboring university campus.
