Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum Description

It's the carousels (a pint-sized version in the back of the building and the real deal up front) that draw the most attention from visiting kids. The former factory turned museum has a hands-on children's gallery in the back, where kids can try their hand at an old-fashioned bean bag toss, participate in arts and craft classes, or simply curl up for some quiet time with a book or puzzle. Pop in on a weekend to see local volunteer wood carvers demonstrating the age-old tradition.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Smaller kids will love the horses made just their size and the children's gallery, which mixes generations-old games with arts and crafts. It's free with admission.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Older kids won't be thrilled by much here. Skip it unless you've got kids with a special interest.

Planning Notes

  • Take a breather. Sunshine streaming through the windows in the children's gallery makes it the perfect place to let kids exercise their creativity. Youth volunteers help supervise parent-child craft projects on the weekends and you'll bump into local families (and make new friends) throughout the week.
  • BYO lunch. There's no food on site and a vending machine will tempt with soft drinks and chips, so pack a lunch and eat at one of the picnic tables outside or in the gallery.
