The Cloisters Description
Tell your kids you're going to take them to a museum specializing in medieval art and architecture, and you may get a big, fat yawn. Tell them instead that the Cloisters is like visiting a medieval castle (true!), and that it's set in one of New York's most beautiful parks (also true!). Fort Tryon Park is set high on a bluff in upper Manhattan, with awesome views of the George Washington Bridge and the New Jersey Palisades across the river. If you're not good at wandering museums on your own, opt for a highlights tour (Tuesday-Friday at 3 p.m.) or garden tour (Tuesday-Sunday at 1 p.m.).
Kid Tips
Babies: The museum is quiet (making it a great place to bring a stroller and absorb art while Junior naps) and the park is used mostly by local families (which means it's a low-key, spacious place to play).
Planning Notes
- It's a jazzy spot. Visiting in summer? Check the park's website for information on free summer jazz concerts.
- It's a leaf-peeping spot. Visting in autumn? Your family gets a double-treat: Leaf peeping at the glorious view of the jewel-hued trees on both sides of the river and a beautiful museum on a cool, crisp day.
