Blue Man Group Description

There's no plot and no dialogue, but the high-energy combination of mime, percussion, visual feats and lots of audience interaction and participation make for a great theatrical performance that kids dig. Once a New York City street performance, the Blue Man Group has been performing in the Astor Place Theatre since 1991. All of the actors wear shiny royal blue latex paint that takes nearly an hour to apply before each show. A DJ warms up the audience, but the gleam really comes when the Blue Man Group takes to the stage and the deep percussive bass begins. Flying toilet paper reams, spraying colored water (blue, of course) and lights strobing fill the theatre. For the true fan, troupe members appear in the lobby post-show for kids to take personal pictures and autographs.

Kid Tips

School-Age Kids: Children under five not admitted.

Planning Notes

  • Running time: 1 hour 45 minutes without intermission
  • Heads up: If your tickets read "Poncho Section," that means you're closest to the stage and might get splattered with liquids used during the performance. But don't worry—it's not "B.Y.O.P." (Bring Your Own Poncho); ponchos will be provided at the show.
  • This is not a show to dress up for: Jeans, sneakers, and casual wear are recommended. The environment is compared to a rock concert.
  • Bright lights"Lots of strobe lights are used, so if you or your children are light-sensitive, take heed.
