Walt Whitman State Historic Birthplace Site Description
A sense of Long Island history and culture graces the quaint grounds of American poet Walt Whitman's birthplace home. In these rooms, Whitman conceived his most famous work of art, Leaves of Grass, which is regarded as a literary masterpiece worldwide. There are also more than 120 photos of Whitman, along with handwritten letters and manuscripts, and guided tours are available. Younger kids will enjoy some of the more hands-on artifacts in the schoolhouse exhibit that contains an actual writing desk Whitman used while teaching. Maps of a hiking and driving tour of historic West Hills are also available.
