Museum of the Moving Image Description
Overheard at this museum devoted to the art, science, and history of film: "I didn't know movies didn't always have sound!" It's worth the subway hop to Queens to explore the galleries and exhibits, but it's not just about looking at pictures of movie stars and funky old camera equipment (though there's plenty of that). Kids can star in their own video flipbook or try their hand at animating an original cartoon. Check the screening schedule online; watching a classic kids' movie (maybe one of your childhood favorites) can be a great way to while away a rainy afternoon.
Kid Tips
School-Age Kids: Steer them to the display of TV-themed toys and lunchboxes. They'll learn that the marketing-to-kids craze didn't start with them (and you may see one like your old "Diff'rent Strokes" lunchbox there!).
Planning Notes
- Free on Fridays. Try to plan a Friday afternoon/early evening visit; the museum's galleries are free Fridays from 4-8 p.m.
- Elmo lives in Queens? Check out the blocks just around the museum; right nearby are film and TV studios, including the one where "Sesame Street" has been filming for decades.
