East Hampton Windmills Description
Harken back to simpler times with a visit to the picturesque windmills that still dot the Hamptons landscape. Though they look pretty, they also tell a story of ingenuity and historic progress. When they were in full use, the windmills provided enough energy to grind grain, saw wood, and pump water. Today Hook Mill, Pantigo Mill, and Gardiners Mill, all built in the 18th and 19th centuries, still stand. Take the kids on a scenic drive and teach them a little about the countryside's history along the way.
Kid Tips
Babies: Since most of the mills can be seen from the road and the museum is quite small, this is a nice, easy, and nap-friendly stop.
Planning Notes
- Plan your route. Start or end with the Pantigo Mill, which sits on the grounds of the Home Sweet Home museum, East Hampton's most famous lean-to, built in the 1700s.
