Main Beach Surf & Sport Description
The water may be chilly, but surf culture is alive and well on the East End. Kids as young as 7 are old enough to practice basic surf techniques (such as timing and choosing a wave), surfing etiquette, and ocean safety rules. For lessons, Main Beach Surf & Sport wins for local knowledge of "what's breakin'" that day, and gentle instruction. (They have tons of gear, too -- your kids won't want to leave the store.) You can do a 90-minute private lesson or join a less expensive group lesson that lasts from one half day to five full days.

Planning Notes
- Call one day in advance and snag a lesson in the morning. Winds are typically lighter -- and crowds thinner -- before 10 a.m.
- Rent a wet suit. Not only is the water cool, but you'll need to cover your chest to avoid getting a rash from the wax on the board. Renting one costs $15 with a lesson.
- Surfing too scary? Main Beach also offers kayak and kite boarding lessons and rents bodyboards, canoes, kayaks, windriders, and pedal boats.
