East Hampton Marine Museum Description
Nature buffs and kids who watch "Deadliest Catch" will love this three-floor homage to rugged sea captains and the waters they travel. More science fair than velvet-roped exhibits, the Marine Museum allows kids to touch many of the items, from whale harpoons to a cannon from the shipwrecked HMS Culloden. Younger kids will love the Discovery Room, filled with marine-themed books, puzzles, and wooden boats. Out back, there's a trawler boat-shaped jungle gym to play pirate on.
Kid Tips
Babies: Note that there are only stairs between floors, so you'll have to hoist the stroller.
Pre-Teens & Teens: This museum is "old school" -- it's located in a 1942 Navy barrack and doesn't have any fancy electronic displays or videos -- so it's best for teens interested in boats and the live-hard/play-hard romance of commercial fishing.
Planning Notes
- Come on a "beach day." The museum won't be so busy.
- Bring snacks. There are a few picnic tables in back.
- Plan ahead. They offer classes such as "Nautical Arts & Nature" in the summer.
