Town of Sag Harbor Description

The charming town of Sag Harbor was once a bustling whaling port. Now the tree-lined Main Street is a haven for old-fashioned treats the kids will love. Start at Long Wharf with giant ice cream waffle cones at Olaf's Ice Cream -- bubble gum and pink, yellow, and blue "Superman" flavors are in high demand -- and check out the docked boats. Walking inland, you'll find many stores to visit, including a five-and-ten variety store opened in 1922, complete with a 25-cent pony ride out front.

Kid Tips

Babies: Don't miss the Wharf Shop for lighthouse kits, dollhouses, and a Thomas train table.

School-Age Kids: On a windy day, nothing beats Kites of the Harbor. Choose from kites shaped like a Red Baron, T-Rex, pirate ship, and many more. They also have a well-edited selection of novelty gifts.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Allow time to linger at the Flying Point Surf & Sport store for skate and surf gear. The store snakes back through several rooms that are packed with everything needed to pass muster on the beach.

Planning Notes

Arrive early. Parking on Main Street can be tight.

Don't miss the Chamber of Commerce. It's located in a restored windmill on Long Wharf (right across from Olaf's).

Rainy day? Goat on a Boat Puppet Theatre has puppet playgroups on Mondays and Fridays at 9:30 a.m. and on Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. They also stage lots of shows in season.
