The Water's Edge Marina Description
Let's face it: in this land of lakes, there's just so much you're going to be able to see from the docks. The adventure-minded will want to get on the water and explore, trolling the lake and investigating one of the myriad public islands in the middle. Do-it-yourselfers can captain their own vessel courtesy of marina operators Dave and Joan. The two will happily rent the craft and share their local pride and knowledge about the lake. Choose from canoes, kayaks, motorboats 7#8212; whatever floats your boat.
Kid Tips
Babies: Some of the motor boats can accommodate carseats, which make them perfectly lovely vehicles for the littlest ones to enjoy the fresh air.
Toddlers & Pre-K: Don't overestimate your little one's attention span for being in a boat. The marina rents by the hour all the way up to the week. Start small and work your way up.
School-Age Kids: The adventure minded will enjoy visiting any one of the lake's 170 islands. More than 40 of them are open to campers, though reservations for the latter are required. Tie up the boat and enjoy.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Can you say, "Tubing." Yup — the marina rents the boats and the tubes. Cowabunga!
Planning Notes
- Buy the map. The lake has pitfalls, even to the experienced boater. Channel markers tell you where to steer, and it's important to pay attention. Owners will give you the rundown, but it's a lot of info. For a few dollars, you can buy the Boater's map and take all the warnings with you on board.
- Sea nosh. Pack a picnic, or buy one from Joan and Dave to go. The boat comes with a cooler full of ice.
- Extra charge. Rentals don't include gasoline, something you'll want to factor into your budget.
- Reservation rules. Reservations are only taken for three days or more. Shorter rentals are first come, first serve, so come early to get your pick.
- Driving rules. Drivers must be at least 16 years old with a valid license; 14-year-olds can drive provided they can show a completion certificate from a boating-safety program.
- Guided tour. If you'd like a canoe/kayak and a guide, try out the Lake George Kayak Co which offers both.
