Whiteface Mountain Description
To all those diehards who say New York isn't a skiers paradise, Whiteface says, "Two Olympics, baby!" True, it may not have the vertical ride of the Rockys. But, 4,000-plus feet is no bunny hill. The Lake Placid area mountain boasts more than 80 slopes, not to mention a good variety of levels including a few beginner runs, and a couple of double black diamonds for all you daredevils. The storied Olympic pedigree — that's just a bonus.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Kids who haven't found their ski legs can play at the Bear's Den Nursery (non-ski program for ages 1 to 6 who can walk) or the Play 'n Ski program (ages 4 to 6, all ski abilities) while older sibs hit the slopes.
School-Age Kids: Kids 12 and younger must have a helmet to participate in any of the ski programs.
Pre-Teens & Teens: You might set 'em free on the slopes, but you'll find probably find 'em having a ball on the Park 'n Pipe. The freestyle area has features like the Battleship Rail and C Box. You may not know what they are — but the kids will.
Planning Notes
- Summer fun. Mid-June through Mid-September, get the birds-eye view of the mountain via the eight-passenger Gondola. The ride can be purchased as part of the Olympic Passport discount program.
- Mountain View. For more splendid views from May to October, drive the five-mile Whiteface Veteran's Memorial Highway ($9 for vehicle and driver; $5 each additional passenger), and either hike or take the elevator to the top.
- Ski lift. The Mountain Valley Shuttle offers free transportation to Whiteface from a number of spots around the area. Check the Web site for details.
