Fort William Henry Description
Those loud booms you hear in Lake George? Cannons from Fort William Henry. Hard to believe, but beneath those kitschy village T-shirt shops lies the hallowed grounds of the French and Indian War, and Fort William Henry (a repro, anyway) gives the historic perspective. The Lincoln-log-style structure is a few steps from town, with costumed guides to show you what it was like here a few hundreds years ago. Kids get to don the British Regular uniform and try out a pretend musket. As for the cannons? They'll have to leave that to the pros.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: The long route will add about 2/10ths of a mile to the trip. But, you'll get a gentler ascent that may be easier for young children to manage.
School-Age Kids: Fort William Henry's significance in the French & Indian War tends toward the intricate side. Kids this age will be much more interested in the musket fire and costumes.
Pre-Teens & Teens: A brush up ontheir knowledge of period history (perhaps reading The Last of the Mohicans) will make a visit much more enjoyable.
Planning Notes
- Available discounts. Admission prices for the Fort are admittedly on the steep side. Make sure to ask about discounts, such as those offered for AAA.
- Ghostly occurances. The darker side of the Fort's history is explored during ghost tours held on certain nights throughout the year.
- History overload. If you're planning a trip north, save the history lessons for Fort Ticonderoga, at the northern tip of Lake George. That is, unless you've got a real history buff in tow; then you might want to do both.
