Lake George Steamboat Company Description

The big boat with the paddle wheel and the giant smokestack is a familiar sight in these parts, generating big smiles as it makes one-hour tours up and down the south end of Lake George. The old girl has been delighting kids (and their grownups) with its Tubby-the-Tuba whistle, and "I think I can" puffs of steam since it was first launched in 1969. It's a perfect way to gawk at some of the lovely scenery nestled along the lake. And, a tiny taste of an era goneby.

Kid Tips

Babies: Fresh air and lots of sensory fun makes this a perfect way to enjoy an hour.

Toddlers & Pre-K: The sights, the sounds, the whistle; this has their name all over it.

School-Age Kids: They'll like the Minne-Ha-Ha well enough. But, they'll probably like it even more on the Thursday-night Fireworks cruises (late June to Labor Day).

Pre-Teens & Teens: The Minne-Ha-Ha is one of those time-honored traditions that everyone — even teens — should do once. It's fun to watch the parasailers, and a great way for everyone to get the lay of the land.

Planning Notes

  • Noise Patrol. The whistle is loud. How loud? Really loud! The ship captain will warn you in advance before tooting. But, if you've got noise-sensitive kids, avoid the seats right near the smokestack.
  • See the sights. In order to best appreciate the narration, choose a seat on the right-hand side of the boat as you board.
  • Extra time. The Steamboat Company offers other trips, including a dinner-cruise. Just be advised that alternate routes can run two hours or longer, and may test your child's attention span.
