Santa Fe Southern Railroad Description
Ride in vintage rail cars to the almost abandoned "ghost town" of Lamy, where you can stop for a picnic lunch. There's even a caterer who meets the train selling Frito pie, a local delicacy made of chili, cheese and -- you guess it -- Fritos corn chips. (The kids will insist you get the recipe.) If at all possible, plan to take the Saturday night trip, which features a barbecue served around a crackling bonfire. If you're lucky (or you happen to go at Halloween) you'll hear some good ghost stories.

Babies: This is a great time for a nap; the movement of the train should lull them to sleep.
Toddlers & Pre-K: Train-crazed preschoolers will want to sit close to the engine, so get in line early to get choice seats.
Planning Notes
- Skip the pricy luxury seats. Kids will be fine on the benches in the lower-priced coach cars, which are restored vintage cars with high ceilings and lots of windows.
