Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad Description
Anyone who loves to ride a steam train around mountains will want to board this excursion train, which departs the small town of Chama in the morning. There's an open car in the back, but wear sunglasses or goggles to avoid getting cinders in your eyes. If you're lucky, you may see a deer, mountain lion, bobcat, or brown bear. The train runs from mid-May to mid-October.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: The best views are on the right side of the train -- especially helpful to smaller riders.
Planning Notes
- Dress in layers. The high altitude here -- 10,015 feet at the route's highest point of Cumbres Pass -- makes it a chilly ride even in the summer, so bring a sweater or jacket.
- Pack lunch. Lunch options in Osier, the midpoint of the trip, are limited, so you may want to pack a picnic.
