Wildlife West Nature Park Description
Like a combination zoo and Southwestern version of a safari, Wildlife West is a 122-acre park where mountain lions, bears, elk and other animals -- all rehabilitated from injuries and unreleasable in the wild -- live out the remainder of their days in undisturbed peace and tranquility. The peregrine falcon shows held on Sundays are amazing, the prairie dog habitat is surprisingly entertaining, and the park features concerts and musical events in a fabulous covered amphitheater. Since it's 50 miles south of Santa Fe, it requires most of a day.
Kid Tips
Babies: The ground is rough, so a frontpack or backpack might be better than a stroller.
Toddlers & Pre-K: Don't be surprised if younger kids are most entranced by the prairie dogs, owls, and other small animals.
School-Age Kids: Plan your schedule to accommodate a Saturday night chuckwagon supper, which includes a hayride.
Planning Notes
- Wear comfortable shoes. You'll be covering a lot of ground while checking out the animals.
- Bring sunscreen and hats. You're going to be outside for most of the day, so be prepared.
- From June to September, there's a fun chuckwagon supper every Saturday night that includes a barbecue dinner, wildlife presentation, and a country-western or bluegrass concert.
