Lucy the Elephant Description

As you turn toward Ocean Avenue, expect a few gasps from the back seat as the kids see a six-story elephant standing watch over the shoreline. You can actually climb inside the giant Elephantine Colossus, as it was called, and kids will be clamoring for the tour to start. If you have the option, forego the film for a fascinating live tour -- tour guides willingly answer the many questions that arise, such as why, when and how Lucy was actually someone's house, and why the bathroom has no toilet.

  • Roadside Landmark

  • History Museum

Kid Tips

Babies: Climbing two stories of narrow, winding staircases with a frontpack carrier could be challenging; you might want to take turns on the 25-minute tour so that you can leave baby down below. The interior is definitely not stroller-friendly.

Toddlers & Pre-K: Tots will love climbing the spiral staircases and looking out Lucy's "good eye" to see the ocean beyond.

School-Age Kids: School-age children will have lots of questions about why there is no toilet in the tiny, non-functioning bathroom. (Answer: they used an outhouse because of plumbing issues.) The stairs are narrow and can be tricky to navigate. The gift shop has lots of cute souvenirs that are perfect for this age group.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Older kids will get a kick out of climbing onto Lucy's roof. Blas‚ or not, it's very cool to be on top of a six-story elephant. (even if it's not cool to show it).

Planning Notes

  • Go before you go. There are no restrooms inside Lucy. The nearest one is in the restaurant across the street (they're happy to let you use the facilities).
  • Skip the roof if you have a fear of heights. It's high, narrow, and looks a bit scary, but guides will assure you that it's really quite safe.
  • Forego footwear fashion. The stairs are a bit tricky, so sensible shoes are best.
  • Eat -- or not. There's no food service on Lucy's premises, but there are two restaurants next door.
