Camping in the White Mountains Description
Camping in the White Mountains puts the smell of fresh pine and the gurgle of a river just outside your tent flap. It's your chance to be not just near the dramatic mountain scenery, but right smack in it; what's more, campsites are significantly less expensive than other accommodations. Private campgrounds in the White Mountains tend to be more cramped but may offer extra amenities like a swimming pool or pond, paddle boats, a playground, or a game room. The White Mountain National Forest has family-friendly campgrounds; three popular choices include Russell Pond, Dolly Copp, and Basin Pond. The state of New Hampshire also runs three campgrounds in the region, including Lafayette (the only non-RV campground inside Franconia Notch State Park, home of the Flume, Cannon Mountain, and more). Kid Tips
Pre-Teens & Teens: Consider booking side-by-side sites. Extra freedom for them can make it more relaxing for the whole family.
Planning Notes
- Check a map. Think about the attractions and activities you'd like to see and do, as well as how much driving is reasonable, when you're choosing a campground. If you want to spend a lot of time in Franconia Notch, for example, a campground near Lincoln or Woodstock makes sense. If you prefer a more remote location, look near Crawford Notch and Bretton Woods. For convenience to North Conway, try private campgrounds or Forest Service campgrounds on the east section of the Kancamagus Highway.
- Plan ahead. Some National Forest campgrounds do not accept reservations; others only accept reservations for a limited number of sites.
- Backcountry options. Wilderness campers need to follow a series of guidelines and rules; be aware of them to avoid stiff penalties.
- Respect the bears. Federal regulations require campers in the White Mountains to follow strict rules about food and garbage, which are designed to protect both humans and the black bears that make their homes here.
- Check the head count. Campgrounds have different rules about the number of adults and children allowed per site; ask ahead so you can reserve two side by side sites if necessary.
