Mount Washington Cog Railway Description
You'll oooh and aaah over presidential views that grow more stunning as the train chugs up some of the world's steepest track to the summit of Mount Washington, the Northeast's tallest peak at 6,288 feet. Highlights of this National Historic Engineering Landmark include manually switching tracks at Skyline to let the upward bound train pass and crossing the Appalachian Trail (kids like watching the progress of ant-size hikers). On top, survey the top-of-the-world view, warm up with a hot chocolate, and mail a post card from the tiny post office at the "home of the world's worst weather."
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Children under 3 ride for free if they sit on an adult's lap. At about 3 hours (minus the 20 minutes at the top), it's a long haul for toddlers who can't sit still for lengthy periods of time.
School-Age Kids: All aboard!
Pre-Teens & Teens: Young adults will appreciate this unique experience (and may get inspired to hike up next time).
Planning Notes
- Wear layers and windproof jackets. Without them, kids will want to stay hunkered down in the roomy Summit House. The wind averages a breezy 37 mph at the summit, and on a recent July visit the temperature at the top was a nippy 42 degrees.
- One engine is a new diesel. It climbs more quickly, giving you 20 extra minutes on the summit, but many kids prefer the "real" steamers that burn 1 ton of coal and 1,000 gallons of water per climb.
- Buy tickets in advance online. The Cog is very popular, and although trains depart hourly throughout most of the summer and into September, trains are often full.
Just the Facts
Hours: July and August: Hourly 9 a.m.-4 or -5 p.m. Check the website for the complete schedule.

What we didn't love:
nohting.
Hi Everyone, first I want to apologize for my English. I think its really important for everyone that I share my experience with this company.br/br/We are a group of 4 person hiking the Mont Washington. My wife is pregnant 4 month but still in really great shape to do hiking. We call before, and they say we can buy one way ticket at the top of the mountain. But, sometimes the train is full so we need to have a plan b. our plan b, was to take the bus...br/br/So we are now at the top, going to the office to get our tickets, buy 4 tickets from a rude man.br/br/Just to let you know, the ride is 60$ but the one way from the top is 42$... br/br/So now its time to get on the train, my wife get first, then I get in, and the guy at the door of the train realize that we hiked.. so he tell, Im sorry, you need to wait... why? We have paid for the ride? Then we realized that they sales ticket at top regardless if they are sold out or not!!! Incredible! and no refund! br/br/Well, just before the train leave, he let us in, we found two place, so my wife can sit shes pregnant, and with the vibration and the boom and bang from the ride, its dangerous for her to stand up in the middle. br/br/But now, the young man who drive the train ask her to stand up, that we are One Ways and that shes cant sit! We paid for the ride, but she cant sit!br/br/Well.. My friend and I, we just say NO and stop listening to him. br/br/And I should say, I dont understand this tourism trap, the only thing you see from the train is br/the scrap that they leave next to the track, br/the charcoal that fall next to the track.br/The big smoke that the train dobr/The really big noise..br/br/And maybe 5-10 minutes of great view... br/ Read More
