Flume Gorge Description

Even the most reluctant hiker gets sucked in by nature's handiwork along this two-mile trail, which winds past giant boulders left by glacial ice, cascading waterfalls, a covered bridge that hangs high over the Pemigewasset River, and of course Flume Gorge itself. Kids may be unimpressed by the initial shallow cascades gentling tumbling down open granite shelves, but hang tight—in just a short time the trail turns to boardwalk and the rock architecture goes from "ho hum" to "wow, look at that!" Kids dig the tunnel effect of 90-foot granite walls soaring overhead with dramatic white water rushing underfoot.

Kid Tips

Babies: Wee ones can happily snooze in a carrier while you hike; the gorge section is not stroller-friendly.

School-Age Kids: They won't want to miss crawling through the Wolf's Den boulder cavern (optional), by the Sentinel covered bridge.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Even teens who say they're uninspired by nature will appreciate the dramatic scenery.

Planning Notes

    • See the flume first. Travel right on the looping path so you see the flume first and the pool last; it's even more impressive this way.
    • Imagine it back then. Look for the photo of the giant egg boulder that hung wedged over the gorge until 1883.
    • Don't bypass the Visitor's Center. It has sandwiches, pizza, snacks, and drinks, plus indoor seating and rest rooms.
    • Riding the Cannon Mountain Tram, too? Save by printing out a Discovery Pass at http://www.visitnh.gov/flume/pdfs/FNSP-discounts.pdf.
