The Tallac Historic Site Description

The Tallac Historic Site used to be called the "Grandest Resort in the World," and while you can't actually vacation there anymore, you can tour its two grand estates. Grandiose, they were the summer residences of fancy San Franciscans at the turn of the last century. The Baldwin Estate, a 4,000-square foot log "cabin," houses a museum and educational center. The nearby Pope Estate is even bigger, and there are daily history programs (led by docents in period costumes) that will appeal to school-aged kids and adults.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Younger kids will not be interested in the estate tours, but should be happy to run around outside while grown-ups check out the gardens.

School-Age Kids: Kids interested in learning how things "were" will have fun touring the estates.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Older kids may enjoy hearing the "lifestyles of the rich and famous" stories about the families who used to summer on Lake Tahoe.

Planning Notes

  • Check the Web site for program information. During the summer months, they offer fun family activities such as "Kitchen Kids," where kids ages 6-12 get to cook in the estate's old fashioned kitchen (and see how hard it was to prepare a meal without a microwave!).

Just the Facts

Hours: The grounds are open from dawn until dusk year round but the estates are only open from Memorial Day weekend through September, from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Check the website for special event hours.
