Lake Mead National Recreation Area Description
The winding, bay-filled Lake Mead, formed by Hoover Dam, is a natural draw for outdoor-minded families keen to boat and swim. Get on the water by renting canoes and kayaks from Willow Beach Marina (928-767-4747), or drop a line and angle for trout, bass, or crappies. Though the lake may be the star attraction, don't overlook terra firma. The Historic Railroad Trail (just past the Alan Bible Visitor Center) takes you through train tunnels built to supply materials to Hoover Dam.
Kid Tips
School-Age Kids: Children under age 14 do not need a fishing license.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Kayaks are key to independent spirits enjoying the park.
Planning Notes
- Pack food. Picnic areas provide plenty of scenic spots for outdoor dining.
- Activities are weather dependent. Summer is a great time for swimming and boating; hiking is most comfortable November through March.
- Avoid exposure. Wear sunscreen and hats year-round.
- Fill your water bottles. Don't count on buying water here as the park is vast. Bring your own.
