Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area Description
For a close, beautiful mountain getaway, hop in the car and drive 17 miles west of Las Vegas to Red Rock Canyon. Wild burros roam the shoulders of the park's 13-mile scenic loop drive, much to the delight of the backseat set. Hikes are a great way to get out and stretch your legs -- trails range from short and flat (best for little ones) to long and rocky (requiring some rock scrambling; ideal for the oldest kids and fit parents).

Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Young ones especially like the wild donkeys, which can be spotted from the car.
School-Age Kids: The sandstone boulders are fun things for kids to scramble on.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Adventurous teens like the longer treks, many of which reach ancient Native American water sources.
Planning Notes
- Don't feed the animals. Park rangers discourage feeding the wild burros.
- BYO picnic. There is no food sold in the park, but there are plenty of places to stop and picnic.
- Visit during fall, winter, or spring. Hikers may prefer cooler, non-summer temps, though scenery enthusiasts can still drive the scenic loop and look for wildlife.
- Gear up appropriately. For hikes you'll need sturdy shoes, plenty of water, and strong sunscreen.
