Valley of Fire State Park Description
Paleo-Native Americans left pictures carved into the red rocks of Valley of Fire State Park. Most of the petroglyphs are easy to spot and close to trailheads, making them accessible to little legs. Don't miss Mouse's Tank for the biggest collection of etchings, which range from identifiable animals to otherworldly abstractions. The short hiking circuit at White Domes Loop Trail passes through slot canyons with colorful sandstone walls. Try to spot lizards and roadrunners, either in person or via their tracks in the sand.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Young ones like the cartoonish petroglyphs and the displays of desert creatures -- some stuffed, some live -- in the Visitors' Center.
School-Age Kids: Running through the narrow canyons and spotting iguanas are distinct joys among this age group.
Pre-Teens & Teens: 12 and ups love scrambling on the rocks here, which are natural climbing gyms.
Planning Notes
- Expect to drive an hour-plus. Most of the 55 miles from Las Vegas to the park is highway, but once inside you'll be driving from sight to sight.
- Break up the trip. When you leave I-15 at exit 75, stop at the filling station before continuing to the park for a look at postcards and Native American gifts.
- Pack food. There is no food service in the park, but there are numerous picnic areas.
- Bring plenty of water. The desert is hot and dry and water is not available in the park.
- Think seasonally. Even an early start here won't allow you to escape the summer swelter. This trip is best fall through spring.
- Dress for it. Wear sunscreen, hats, and sturdy shoes when hiking.
