Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay Description
Not your standard aquarium, Shark Reef gets the full Las Vegas treatment, complete with a walk-through tunnel in a massive reef where fish swim in and out of a shipwreck. Shark Reef is more entertainment than education, but tour headsets provide narrative tidbits about the animals. Kids can't get enough of the rays and baby sharks in the carefully supervised touch tank, and the variety of exotic animals -- from golden crocodiles to spiny lionfish -- keep it colorful for those who just want to look.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Big, colorful tanks, many at toddler height, engage the little ones. Skip the free headsets, which are easily tangled.
School-Age Kids: The sweet spot for this attraction, 6- to 12-year-olds interested in nature won't be afraid of the touch tanks and can manage the headsets.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Kids 13 and older will appreciate the behind-the-scenes tour that goes backstage every half hour from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for an extra $8.
Planning Notes
- Go early in the day. Like everywhere else in Vegas, the lines build as the day progresses.
- Beware the gift shop. The tour ends with a trip through the gift shop, so be prepared to rush through unless you want to buy expensive rubber sharks.
- Plan to eat before or after. There is no food sold in Shark Reef, but vending machines are available outside the aquarium and there are restaurants nearby.
