Glacier Park Boat Company Tour Description

If you'd like a glimpse of Glacier's more pristine stretches of wilderness, but you're not ready to backpack with your kids, try a one-hour long narrated boat tour of St. Mary Lake. You'll see parts of the park not reachable by car -- waterfalls, rugged cliffs, a glimpse of the prairies, Sexton Glacier, and Wild Goose Island. And just when the kids are getting restless on the boat, you have a chance to stop, get off, and hike 200 yards or so to Baring Falls, gorgeous and full of rocks for skipping. The company also offers boat tours of Swift Current, Josephine, McDonald and Two Medicine lakes.

Kid Tips

Babies: Bring a frontpack if you want to see Baring Falls: it's not a difficult walk, but it's definitely not stroller-friendly.

School-Age Kids: If you ride the 10 a.m. boat, do take the guided hike to St. Mary Falls. It's not too strenuous, it's beautiful, and the kids can earn their Junior Ranger badge from the guide (a real NPS ranger).

Planning Notes

  • Combine the tour with a hike. Ride the 10 a.m. boat, take the free St. Mary Falls hike (2 miles roundtrip), then ride the noon boat back arriving back at the dock by 1 p.m.
  • Bring snacks and water. There's no food sold on the boat or at the stops. And bring a jacket, no matter what the weather looks like when you leave. The weather can be unpredictable, and winds can pick up suddenly on St. Mary Lake.
  • Explore your options. Tours leave at several times during the day.
