Cowboy Cookout and Horseback Ride Description

Saddle up and hit the trail for a family horseback ride along the scenic Yellowstone River and Rocky Mountains. The one-hour ride is ideal for beginners (including kids age 7 and older) and relaxing for more experienced riders. Afterwards, head back to the ranch for a fireside cowboy cookout that will surely rank as one of the best family dinners ever. Enjoy steak and chicken with all the fixings, then cozy up with the kids and tell campfire tales as the sun sets on a perfect day.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Riders must be at least 7 years old. Younger children (and others who prefer not to ride) can hang out at the ranch and then enjoy the cookout for a reduced price.

School-Age Kids: The dinner menu is traditional and delicious (chicken, steak, baked potatoes, corn on the cob, etc.), but there aren't other options for kids who are fickle about food.

Planning Notes

  • Go after touring Yellowstone. The Flying Pig Adventure Company is only one mile from the north entrance to Yellowstone Park, and this unique family dinner experience is a great way to relax together after an active day outdoors.
  • Get there early. The guides suggest that riders check in about an hour before departure.
  • Wear close-toed shoes and long pants. Riding boots aren't required, but sandals and flip-flops aren't recommended.
  • Bring a jacket. Even the warmest Montana days turn cool when the sun sets.
  • A non-alcoholic evening. Iced tea and lemonade are served with dinner, but riders are free to bring their own alcoholic drinks.
  • Alternate activities. Check the website for a full list of Flying Pig activities, such as a mid-afternoon whitewater rafting trip or a Yellowstone tour instead of horseback riding before dinner. Longer vacation packages are also available.
