The Butterfly House Description
The sight of whirling, fluttering, swooping butterflies in a kaleidoscope of colors is nothing short of magic at the Butterfly House. Quiet awe prevails in the conservatory as kids hold their breath when a Monarch lands on their shoulder, spiked by squeals of joy when an iridescent blue Morpho chances by. Kids love to nose close to the display of chrysalis' to get a look at emerging butterflies. Benches make it easy to spend an hour here watching the winged ones, and for parents, the delight in their children.
Kid Tips
Babies: Infants delight at the sight of color in flight -- a great photo opportunity.
Toddlers & Pre-K: Kids love the butterflies, of course, but when their attention fades, revive it with a visit to the craft room for some hands-on exploration of color.
Planning Notes
- Dress for the tropics. The conservatory is quite warm, which can be welcome in the winter, though be prepared for kids to drop their coats on you (there is no coat check).
- Police the kids. Little ones have a tendency to want to touch the butterflies, which is a no-no.
- Bring your own snacks. You won't find any food or drink for sale here.
- Ride the carousel. While you're out in Faust Park, catch a ride on the St. Louis Carousel, a 1929 vintage amusement, for the bargain price of $1.
