St. Louis Art Museum Description

Just reaching the parking lot that is surrounded by a massive collection of old trains is enough to elicit "Wow!" from the backseat set; they'll be off and running among the parked rails in the outdoor train yard at the first opportunity. Hop aboard a vintage elevated train from Chicago for a spin around the grounds with a uniformed conductor, then race over to the miniature train, a one-third scale replica of an 1863 railroad that makes several laps over an old train turntable used as a bridge. The cool cars in the auto exhibit thrill boys and dads.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Little kids could ride all day, so get the all-day pass that allows them to. Friendly conductors even allow the little ones to take the driver's seat for a photo. The Thomas the Train play table in the visitor center is also a huge hit.

School-Age Kids: "Awesome!" is the most common response from train lovers in this set. While the train rides thrill everyone, school kids will even enjoy walking through the many trains in the yard and gaping at one massive snowplow engine.

Planning Notes

    • Take the caboose. Sit just in front of the guide on the miniature train and he'll likely let you announce "All aboard!" into his microphone as the train departs.
    • Do touch. Unless otherwise marked, most of the trains are open to explorers; in many of them kids can fiddle with the controls.
    • Beware walking tours. These history-focused talks can get pretty sleepy for kids who just want to have fun.
    • Go on weekends. Half the fun here is riding the trains, which don't always operate on weekdays.
