St. Louis Art Museum Description
There's a lot to inspire the budding artist here, including the eerie Egyptian mummy exhibit on the lower level and the African animal-themed masks. The museum rolls out the welcome mat to families every Sunday afternoon, when kids can make their own art amid world renown sculptures or take a tour with a docent who's mindful of the short attention spans in the audience when discussing Picasso and color. It's a weekly celebration of the arts, with storytelling and live music.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Little kids are captivated by the music, art, and storytelling activities on Sundays; less engaged other times.
School-Age Kids: Kids who thought this would be boring have been known to resist leaving the building after a lively tour with a kid-friendly guide and time making their own art.
Planning Notes
- Always on a Sunday. The museum's family programming takes place primarily on Sunday afternoons.
- Pay per view. Though admission to the museum is free, special exhibits are often not. However, when there is a charge for a show, it is waived on Fridays.
- Pick up a stroller. If you've forgotten yours and someone's suddenly begging, borrow one from the museum—it's free.
- Dine in. Though there's a lovely sit-down restaurant here that overlooks the sculpture-filled terrace, the more casual café is a quicker and less expensive option and offers a kid's menu of familiar basics.
