Wonderscope Children's Museum Description

Conveniently located just off Interstate 35, but nestled on a quiet street in a suburban part of Kansas City, Wonderscope offers hands-on fun for little ones. From a pint-sized medical clinic to a live hydroponic garden, the exhibits draw kids in and let them explore and touch everything in sight, with the added bonus of learning about physics, gardening, outer space, city life, art, and nature, among other concepts. An art room invites kids to draw and paint, and they get to bring their creations home with them.

Kid Tips

Babies: It's rare to find a museum with a section just for babies, but Wonderscope has the Small Wonders room that's for kids ages 2 and younger only (with conveniently located changing tables).

Toddlers & Pre-K: The LEGO Ocean Adventure exhibit is the star of the show at Wonderscope. Kids can crawl around a LEGO submarine (and giggle at the toilet made out of white LEGO bricks) wearing goggles and "oxygen tanks" (Velcro vests with lightweight bottles on the back). The LEGO Lego play tables are best for ages 3 and older.

School-Age Kids: Wonderscope is designed for kids ages 9 and younger, but there's still cool stuff for all ages, especially the Raceways Room, which teaches basic physics lessons using golf balls that roll along various race courses.

Planning Notes

  • Best for ages 9 and younger. This is truly a place for younger kids, although older kids with siblings will still find fun things to see and do -- along with their parents.
  • Park behind the building. Free parking is available at the back of the building, which is also where the main entrance is located (the bus drop-off and field trip entrance face the street).
  • Plan a picnic or grab a snack. A colorful indoor picnic area with vending machines is located near the LEGO exhibit on the lower level. Most of the other exhibits come before this one, so hit those before stopping to eat.
  • Leave time to shop. The small Wonderstore at the museum sells books, art kits, and puzzles.
