Dick's 5 & 10 Description

It's hard to say who has more fun at Dick's -- parents or their kids. The aisles of this vintage five-and-dime are crammed with more than 50,000 items, from kiddie cowboy hats to harmonicas to the lamp made famous by the movie "A Christmas Story," plus hardware, housewares, whoopee cushions... the list goes on. Throughout the store are World War II-era art prints (signed by local boys who crewed the planes and ships), an arrowhead collection, and other oddities to peruse; it's a cornucopia of wonderment for kids and adults alike.

Kid Tips

Babies: The crowds make navigating a stroller virtually impossible. Bring a baby carrier instead.

Toddlers & Pre-K: This is the kind of place where a few dollars can go a long way, but the fact that there's so much to choose from can be a bit overwhelming for little ones. Talk beforehand about what kinds of things they might like, and ask at the counter where those items can be found.

School-Age Kids: They'll want to see it all, so allow a little more time for the older kids. Budding collectors will be especially fascinated by what they find, from trains to planes and toy cars to figurines and beyond.

Go early. Dick's is a classic American shopping experience, and it gets crowded -- both from the merchandise and the shoppers. The best time to visit is early in the day or during popular show times (typically 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.).
