Dogwood Canyon Nature Park Description
There's a little bit of everything at 2,200-acre Dogwood (a private nature preserve run by the folks at Bass Pro Shop) -- kids can choose to see the canyon from a kayak, on horseback, via bike, or on foot. A guided tram tour offers an easy way to view the park's wildlife (ranging from bison and elk to Texas Longhorn cattle), and includes a stop for a walk around a stunning waterfall and overlook. Caves high in the bluffs were once used for Native American burials and are visible from various points, but not open for exploration.
Kid Tips
Babies: The six-mile paved trail meanders through limestone bluffs and past amazing waterfalls. Stroller rentals are available for a modest price.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Fly fishing clinics and guided fishing excursions lasting from two hours to two days are an excellent introduction to the sport.
Planning Notes
- Adventure pass. The best and most economical way to experience the nature park is by buying an Adventure Pass, a single-day pass ($35.95 adults/$20.95 kids 2-11) that offers the tram tour, self-guided biking, and fishing; and if bought after 1 p.m., includes admission for the next day. Pay extra to add a horseback ride to the pass ($17.50 adults/$7.50 kids).
- Food, glorious food. From March through October, Dogwood offers sandwiches, kids' meals, bison burgers, and daily specials at the Outdoor Café.
