Talking Rocks Cavern Description

Leave the sweltering Branson summer heat behind and descend approximately 150 stairs through a narrow passageway to the surprisingly chilly Talking Rocks Tavern, which despite its name is actually an eerily quiet, dark, drippy, and infinitely fascinating place. Guided 45-minute tours of this privately-owned cave highlight the abundance of brilliant crystal formations, which will dazzle even those who have explored larger, more well-known caves. Kids will delight in the tour's light show, which highlights the brilliant formations, and then be completely surprised at just how dark total darkness is when the lights are turned out.

Kid Tips

Babies: Strollers are not allowed on the tour. Visitors must descend the stairs to reach the cave floor, so backpack baby carriers are recommended.

Toddlers & Pre-K: The cave is well-lit and generally not scary for youngsters, but holding them during the "lights out" section of the tour may ward off a case of the frights.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Two additional tours offer an exciting, in-depth journey into the caves. The Powell Cave tour (the more tame of the two) involves squeezing through some tight spaces and going up and down ladders to explore the deeper reaches of the caverns (dress to get very dirty). The Wild Cave Adventure tour lives up to its name -- it's a down and dirty crawling exploration through over two miles of caves that lasts 4 to 6 hours. Advanced registration (at least one week) is required.

Planning Notes

    • Bundle up. The caves remain a relatively constant, just under 60-degree temperature year round, which can feel cold even in the hot and humid summer months.
    • More to see above ground. Outside the cave, a nature trail offers a scenic, easy hike that ends with a climb up a 40-foot observation tower for fantastic views of the mountains, while the chance to crawl through a "spelo box" gives kids a feel for exploring tight underground passages.
