Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery Description
It's all about trout at the fish hatchery, which shows kids in vivid detail the many stages of life, from squiggles so tiny they have to strain to see them to colorful trout ready to enter the wild. While a must-visit for the serious angler, kids who've never fished enjoy this stop, too -- peering into the tanks, marveling at the hundreds of fish in every stage of life, feeding those in the far tanks that they think aren't getting enough attention. The hatchery produces over a million trout annually to stock the state's lakes; the Lake Taneycomo dam is fascinating to the kids, as its water varies from a trickle to a waterfall-like flow visible from the hatchery.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: The huge tanks of fish are akin to individual pools, and there's no protective fencing to keep little ones at bay.
School-Age Kids: Join in the guided tour. Even the non-anglers in the family will be drawn in by the enthusiasm of the guides, and they'll learn a lot about conservation.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Unless they're avid anglers, skip this attraction.

- Reel it in. Fish fanatics can learn everything they want to know about the conservation and life cycle of the fish by joining an engaging (and free) guided tour, held at the top of every hour.
- Quarter culture. Load up on quarters; kids of every age will want to have their own cup of dry, cereal-like fish food from the bubble-gum dispensers scattered throughout the hatchery.
