Minneapolis Institute of Arts Description

This world-class museum offers art and artifacts from all over the world, spanning ancient times to the present. Throughout the museum, you'll find "Interactive Learning Stations" which use text, audio, video, and animation to help visitors (kids and adults alike) learn more about what they've seen and understand the context in which the art was created. Don't miss its sparkly new Family Center with games and computer activities, a private nursing area, family restroom, and a comfy place to grab a quick snack or rest with the kids. The best part? The museum is free to the public at all times, so if your kids are in a mood or have short attention spans, you won't be out any admission costs.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: The museum asks that visitors stay a foot away from art, and they aren't kidding; make sure your little ones can obey the rules.

School-Age Kids: The ornamental masks, intricate statues, and other elaborate pieces in the African, Oceanic, and Native American Art collections and Asian Art collection are a big hit with this age group.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Kids interested in the arts or history will find this vast collection impressive but overwhelming, so check the Website ahead of time for features your kids will find particularly interesting.

Planning Notes

  • Leave the diaper bag in the car. Backpacks (including baby backpacks) or large bags aren't allowed in the museum, so your diaper bag may not make the cut. Stash a diaper and some wipes in your purse instead, and borrow a free stroller from the museum.
  • Leave the snacks in the diaper bag. The museum has a strict no-food-or-drink rule, so if your kids need a snack break, head to the Family Center.
