Guthrie Theater Description

The new Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis's Riverfront District is more than just a place to stage productions. The building is a destination unto itself, featuring a caf‚ , an upscale restaurant and bar, a unique gift shop, and an "endless bridge" offering fantastic views of the river and park below. The building itself is impressive, and images from past productions flicker across the lobby walls and ceilings. It's free to enter and you don't need to attend a show to check it out.

Kid Tips

School-Age Kids: Don't skip out on the Endless Bridge, an enclosed structure that stretches the equivalent of 12 stories toward the Mississippi River and offers fantastic views of the falls, Stone Arch Bridge, and more through the 30-foot-wide window.

Pre-Teens & Teens: To enhance the backstage tour, download a self-guided audio tour to your iPod -- or rent an iPod from the box office.

Planning Notes

  • Lunch with a view. The Guthrie is right across the street from the Mill City Museum, and there's a fantastic park and farmers' market nearby. Plan on packing a lunch or taking it to go from the Level 5 Cafe so you can enjoy the riverfront area.
  • Teenage tour de force. If your teens are budding thespians, directors, costume artists, or stage techies, they may be interested in taking a 45-minute backstage tour offered Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday mornings at 10 a.m. The cost is $10 per person; $6 for students and seniors. Call ahead or go online for tour tickets.

Just the Facts

Hours: The lobby is open daily from 8 a.m.-midnight. If you plan on eating there or taking in a show, check the website for more detailed schedules.

Fees: Free

Recommended Time: Less than 1 hour

What we loved:
The thrust stage!

While I havent been to the Guthrie in years since before I had kids, I cant express how amazing the shows are at this theater. Ive never had a bad experience there, and I have seen many bad performances at other theaters around the country. br/The thrust stage makes it unique, but the sets, actors, and direction make it the best.
