Historic Fort Snelling Description
Find out what life was like in an 1820s military fort. Located on the banks of the Mississippi River, Fort Snelling has been restored to a living history museum. Costumed guides lead you through exhibits that offer a glimpse of what it was like to be an American soldier living in a fort that was once smack-dab in the middle of the wilderness. Kids can take part in activities -- swing a hammer in the blacksmith's shop, mend clothes, or scrape a hide -- and they'll love watching the guides practice military drills and fire weapons.

Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: The sounds of muskets and cannons firing might startle or scare some little ones.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Interacting with the costumed interpreters is a big hit for kids at this age, such as Mrs. Snelling, wife of the commanding officer, who will give a gentle lecture about etiquette and fashion over a cup of tea.
Planning Notes
- Check the calendar. The fort is open year-round, but winter hours are limited, and the living history program is only available May through October (and only on weekends in May, September, and October).
