Science Museum of Minnesota Description

Whether your kid is into dinosaurs, dirt, or DNA, there's something here that'll float her boat (and speaking of, kids can climb inside a real tugboat in the Mississippi River gallery). The museum features diverse hands-on exhibits that teach kids of all ages (and grown-ups) about the human body, dinosaurs and fossils, science, and math. You can even enjoy an educational round of mini-golf with your family, where each hole presents an opportunity to learn about erosion, rivers, or Minnesota wildlife.

Kid Tips

Babies: The museum is stroller-friendly, but since it often gets very crowded, it's more convenient to take the stairs (and more fun, since they play music as you go), so consider carrying your baby in a front pack or sling.

Toddlers & Pre-K: If you aren't sure whether your child can handle an IMAX movie, consider seeing a 3D movie instead -- they're about half as long and not nearly as intense.

School-Age Kids: Be sure to take at least one trip down the musical stairs, where each step produces a distinct note that can be heard throughout the staircase. (If you've got a few kids, have them all hit different stairs at the same time.) You'll also find great photo ops in the lab with kids 8 and up -- don a lab coat and safety goggles and set out to discover DNA.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Kids this age will get a kick out of the Gallery of Questionable Medical Devices and other odd objects and artifacts in the Collector's Gallery.

Planning Notes

  • Sign up in advance. If you're planning to attend any of the special exhibits or IMAX or 3D movies, you'll need to sign up for a time slot and buy tickets at the front desk. Check how much time you'll need to set aside for each special show, and ask what age range it's geared toward before you invest in tickets.
