Bayfront Park Beach Description
The quaint town of Petoskey is about an hour and a half north of Traverse City. Just off the downtown is Bayfront Park, with an under-the-highway access tunnel younger kids will be thrilled to run through. The beach offers a panoramic view of Little Traverse Bay and is a great place to hunt for Petoskey stones, a unique fossilized coral that jewelry makers and rock collectors polish for wearing and admiring. There's also a marina, the Little Traverse History Museum, a softball field, and picnic area.
Kid Tips
Babies: There are plenty of stroller-accessible areas to walk at the park, but you'll want to carry your baby if you head close to the water to swim or hunt for Petoskey stones.
Planning Notes
- Fossil-finding tip. Look near the break wall with the small lighthouse -- it's one of the best spots for Petoskey stone hunting.
- Stay for the sunset. It's spectacular.
- Dress for sand, wind, and water. As with any Michigan beach, it can get windy and the water can be chilly, so dress accordingly. The beaches are rocky, so water shoes or sandals are a must.
